“The Great Barrier Reef is dead”. Hold your horse’s people, you may be inclined to do some research first. After hearing that now The Great Barrier Reef is not so great anymore, people were absolutely shocked, 25 million years in the making had now become a deceased and desolate underwater land possessed by dead coral. Except is that really true? According to The Guardian and CNN online, the Reef is not dead but under severe stress! Now, that is hardly something to celebrate, but is a small victory. As knowing this, efforts may be carried out to save this ecosystem with the beauty of the heavenly interpretation of Elysian Fields. So what is the main reason for this horrible event? Unfortunately it is climate change but mostly bleaching, it is us, and we are guilty. The effects of this bleaching obviously change the colour of coral to something which is considered unnatural, however as well as this, the consistent bleaching has caused problems with fish wanting to mate, and fertility is decreased amongst marine life due to living in bleach infested waters. The only part of the Reef now expected to flourish as much as it can with the problems included, is the Southern half, but therefore only the Southern half will develop momentum and sport a fuller marine life number, but that still isn’t a promise, only a possibility. We can’t allow this picturesque god-send of a place to turn into a ‘graveyard-reef’ it must be saved. The message that should be sent out from now about this island, is how it is suffering and how help is needed, otherwise one of Australia’s most beautiful phenomenon’s will pass, the Reef is set to be gone by 2050, will it even get to that point? I hope it does, I hope more so it will surpass that expectation but it seems unlikely.
